Uro TC

Articolo del 18/04/2025

Uro CT (Urological Computed Tomography) plays a crucial role in the landscape of modern diagnostic imaging, particularly for the evaluation of the kidneys, urinary tract, and bladder. Thanks to the rapid technological advancements in CT imaging, it has virtually replaced traditional urography.

We explore this topic with Dr. Cristiana Ticca, Radiologist at the ArsbioMedica Clinic.

What is Uro CT and what is it used for?
Uro CT is a non-invasive diagnostic test that uses X-rays to examine the abdomen and pelvis, focusing on both the structure and function of the kidneys and excretory pathways, including:

  • Renal calyces

  • Renal pelvis

  • Ureters

  • Bladder

Depending on the clinical suspicion, the exam can be performed with or without contrast media. When contrast is used, the scan includes a “urographic” phase to assess both the anatomy and functionality of the urinary tract.

Is Uro CT a first-line diagnostic test?
Uro CT is generally performed following first-line imaging tests, such as renal and bladder ultrasound.

In some cases, it may be complemented by more advanced imaging techniques, such as MRI of the urinary system or multiparametric prostate MRI.

When is it indicated?
Uro CT is often indicated after an ultrasound of the urinary tract, particularly in the clinical suspicion of:

  • Kidney or bladder stones: Uro CT is highly effective at detecting even small calcifications in the urinary tract and bladder, often eliminating the need for contrast media in these cases.

  • Suspected tumors in the kidneys, ureters, or bladder

  • Urinary tract infections

  • Assessment of anatomical variants (e.g., congenital anomalies) and the venous and arterial vessels

It’s also worth noting that Uro CT allows for the evaluation of other abdominal parenchymal organs such as the liver, pancreas, adrenal glands, and spleen. However, like most CT scans, it provides limited detail for the uterus, prostate, and only partial views of the intestines.

At ArsbioMedica, patients benefit from state-of-the-art technology such as the 512-slice CT scanner, enabling high-resolution, fast, and tailored examinations. With the guidance of our expert specialists, each patient is directed toward the most appropriate diagnostic pathway, ensuring swift and accurate answers to support urological health.
