Colposcopy is the examination used to investigate the anatomy of tissues in the female genitalia. Through optical magnification, it allows for the detection of pre-neoplastic lesions, particularly in the uterine cervix.
The examination is not painful. Some may experience a tingling sensation or mild burning, or a slight prick if a biopsy is performed.
Indications for colposcopy include:
- Abnormal Pap test results (ASCUS; L-SIL; H-SIL) and/or a positive HPV test for the presence of high-risk oncogenic viruses.
- Presence of an ulcer or abnormal lesion (e.g., a wart – condyloma).
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding.
- Evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment for a previous pre-neoplastic lesion.
The examination cannot be performed during menstruation; it is advisable to postpone it in this case. However, pregnant women can undergo the test.
No specific preparation is required for colposcopy. In the 24 hours before the examination, sexual intercourse and the use of tampons, pessaries, creams, or douches should be avoided.
