The electrocardiogram, or ECG, is a non-invasive examination that records the activity and intensity of the heart’s electrical signals, allowing for the measurement of heart rate and the regularity of the heartbeat rhythm.
Why undergo an ECG?
The ECG is crucial in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular pathologies such as cardiomyopathies, heart failure, arterial hypertension, ischemic heart diseases, heart failure or insufficiency, coronary diseases, pericarditis, and alterations in heart rhythm (arrhythmias, fibrillations, extrasystoles). Additionally, the ECG is an excellent tool for prevention and monitoring, enabling the diagnosis of ongoing or past heart attacks, and it’s most effective when compared with previous recordings.
When is an electrocardiogram recommended?
The electrocardiogram is particularly indicated in cases of:
- Family history of heart diseases,
- Use of medications that may alter or affect the regular activity of the heart,
- Presence of devices such as pacemakers or similar ones.
- The electrocardiogram is also recommended as a routine examination, not only for high-risk individuals but for all ages. It may also be required for many sporting activities.
How is the electrocardiogram conducted at Clinica Arsbiomedica?
Electrodes are applied to the patient’s chest along with a gel that promotes the transmission of waves for recording the heart’s electrical signals. The examination is performed with the patient lying down, using a transducer, a painless and non-invasive device.
