Entero CT (Computed Tomography) is an advanced imaging technique designed to provide a detailed examination of the small intestine.

This fast, non-invasive procedure delivers high-resolution images of the digestive system, making it an invaluable tool for diagnosing conditions such as Crohn’s disease, intestinal inflammation, strictures, and other abnormalities of the intestinal mucosa.

At ArsbioMedica, our state-of-the-art 512-slice CT scanner, combined with the use of a contrast agent, allows Entero CT to offer highly precise insights into the structure and functionality of the intestine. This enables doctors to make accurate diagnoses and devise the most appropriate treatment plans for each patient.

To address common concerns and provide essential information for patients, we spoke with Dr. De Cicco, a radiologist and expert in Entero CT at our clinic, who answered some of the most frequently asked questions about this examination.

  1. What is Entero CT, and when is it prescribed? What conditions can it detect?

Entero CT is a diagnostic procedure that, through specific preparation, enables a detailed study of the small intestine. It is particularly useful in assessing chronic inflammatory conditions.

  1. What are the advantages of Entero CT over other diagnostic tests for the small intestine?

Entero CT offers several advantages over traditional imaging methods. It provides superior anatomical detail compared to outdated radiographic techniques, such as the small bowel enema, which involved administering an oral contrast agent and tracking its transit to visualize the intestinal loops indirectly.

Compared to Entero-MRI (Magnetic Resonance Enterography), Entero CT is significantly faster, improving patient compliance and cooperation during the examination

This examination allows for a precise evaluation of the intestinal walls, helping detect focal thickening, areas of stenosis, intussusception, or abnormal growths within the lumen. In cases of chronic inflammatory diseases, Entero CT can reveal thickened and hypervascularized intestinal walls, which may then require further investigation using additional diagnostic techniques.

  1. How should one prepare for an Entero CT scan? Is a specific diet required beforehand?

Preparation for Entero CT involves following a low-residue diet for three days before the procedure, along with the administration of a laxative.

During the examination, a contrast agent is given to adequately distend the intestinal loops, while an intravenous contrast is administered during the scan. Additionally, Buscopan is used to slow down intestinal peristalsis, ensuring optimal imaging of the small intestine. This meticulous preparation is essential for obtaining high-quality diagnostic images.

  1. Are there any contraindications or risks associated with Entero CT?

The primary contraindication is an allergy to the intravenous contrast agent.

  1. How long does the Entero CT procedure take?

Entero CT is a quick and painless examination, lasting approximately three minutes.

  1. Is Entero CT suitable for children, or are there age-related limitations?

Entero CT can be used to evaluate inflammatory conditions in children; however, due to radiation exposure, its use is generally reserved for selected cases. Whenever possible, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is preferred for pediatric patients.
